What is an BTP card?

BTP card, which stands for ‘Bâtiment Travaux Publics’, is an individual, secure card that allows identification of workers in the construction industry. Its primary purpose is to combat illegal labour and unfair competition. It is mandatory for anyone working on a construction site and must be shown on request to inspection authorities, clients or other concerned parties.

It is required for workers involved in construction activities such as earth moving, construction or demolition. Certain professions such as architects, drivers and IT personnel are exempted, as are trainees with a valid certificate.

  1. Validity period: The EDP card is now valid for five years, regardless of changes in the employer. However, employers must register each new posting and update the details through SIPSI.
  2. Application process: This should be done through the official website, after an SIPSI notification is made.
  3. Verification and obligations: Employees must carry the card with them at all times while working. In case of loss or damage, the employer must apply for a replacement card.

Why is the BTP card Important?

Failure to comply with the obligations can lead to heavy penalties. The fine is up to €4,000 per employee, and for repeat offences within two years it can reach €8,000. For employers and employees in the construction industry, it is essential to keep abreast of these new rules. Good preparation will prevent fines and ensure smooth execution of work in France.
